Data from Terna (Italian electricity grid operator)

Fossil fuels, on the other hand, see a 19% drop. We can estimate that in the first six months of the year, these sources have satisfied 44.4% of the Italian electricity needs, compared to 35.4% in the first half of 2023. Wind power has covered 8.3% of the national electricity demand, photovoltaic 11.6%, and hydroelectric 16.5% (net of the contribution of pumping).

In the first half of the year wind and photovoltaic, together, represent 45.5% of all generation from renewable electricity.
Hydroelectric is at 39%.

In the EU instead, according to estimates published by Eurelectric in July, in the first half of 2024, the electricity generated was the “cleanest” ever: renewables reached 50% of overall production, while nuclear contributed with about 24%. Renewables in 2024 produced 696 TWh (50.38%), ahead of nuclear with 325 TWh (23.51%), while fossil fuels stopped at 361 TWh (26%).

For the first time wind and photovoltaic have produced more electricity than fossil fuels in the European Union, exceeding gas and coal.

The trend of renewable electricity in the first half of 2024 is therefore clearly improved compared to the same period last year. For the first time wind and photovoltaic have produced more electricity than fossil fuels in the European Union, exceeding gas and coal.
